Uhhhhh....

No, it's not an optical illusion. Our newel posts are different heights and one sticks out farther than the other one. One might think that our carpenter was drunk when this occurred but that was not the case. He actually was trying to comply with code for the stairs leading down but had not consulted with us about the adjustment. It has been corrected but was quite disconcerting when I saw it. This happened one day after we found out that the dimensions of our cooktop were misrepresented by the distributor. We had more than three extra inches of depth and our cooktop was sticking out of our custom cabinets (made specifically to house this cooktop) looking like a woman nine months pregnant trying to fit into her skinny jeans. Ugh, where's my chocolate?

Umm...how did they think that was ok?

to make a long story short... he extended the shorter newel to line up with the stairs going down to meet the handrail code for the downstairs. he did not want to put a handrail going downstairs on the opposite wall because there is a pocket door there and it would be hard to anchor. thus the newel further out that had to be shorter to meet the rail coming down the stairs in the right spot. it was logical but not aesthetically pleasing.
